All government hospitals have been informed to return 3 batches of drugs to the Medical Supplies Unit after an issue occurred regarding the effectiveness of the anti-venom serum prescribed for snake bites. According to Medical Supplies Unit Director Doctor Kamal Jayasinghe, the measure was taken when several patients died within last few months due to a fault in the anti-venom serum which was given to them. He added that few samples of the problematic anti-venom serum have already been sent for the lab tests. Even though the usual average percentage of deaths of snake bite victims after hospitalizing remains at below 3 percent, an increase in the number of deaths was noted within the past few months from several hospitals.
