Celebrating Sri Lanka

THE NAME, FLAG & ANTHEM OF THE NATION
There has been a lot of discussion on the appearance in public of a sticker with a particular spin on what can be argued to be the true name of this island, “Sinhale”. “Sinha-Le,” literally (of the) Lion (Sinha) Blood, with the first part in yellow and the last or ‘le’ element in red first appeared in social media when someone got a tattoo done, took a picture and posted it on Facebook. Since then it has gone viral in Sri Lanka. While a particular group has happily piggybacked on the term and extremist ‘interpreters’ have indulged in vandalism that is a clear articulation of virulent communalism, by and large, this ‘campaign’ if you want to call it that, has been marked by a disorganization that can only indicate that it has resonated with something felt on the ground.

Mushroom lights turn any room into magical forest
Any nature buff will just love these LED Mushroom Lights by Japanese designer Yukio Takano of The Great Mushrooming.

The synthetic funghi are constructed out of glass to look as if they are growing out of the found wood of logs and tree stumps. In reality, though, the custom-built lamps are meant to serve as creative illumination for any home.
The variations in design mimic a variety of species and, just like many types of mushrooms, these are definitely not meant to be eaten!
The small lights consist of LEDs that are embedded inside colorful, wavy sprouts to create a soft glow of anything from pale blue to soft red to warm yellow.
The playful creations are powered by batteries located in the base of the wood and can be flipped on and off with a conspicuous, retro switch that sits on the front of the structure.
Each piece is packaged in a long, wooden box that appears to be aged and colorfully painted to complement the enclosed product. These are definitely a fun and unique way to brighten up any interior space!

Sydney Thunder wins men's Big Bash League final
Sydney Thunder completed their fairytale rise from Big Bash League also-rans to champions, with a tense three-wicket win against Melbourne Stars in the final at the MCG.

Competing in their first BBL final after finishing last on three occasions, Thunder rode Usman Khawaja’s coat tails – he made 70 off 40 balls – to chase down Stars’ total of 9-176 with three balls to spare in front of 47,672 fans on Sunday.

Ben Rohrer landed the final blow of an epic encounter, hitting the winning runs with a straight six off the third ball of Daniel Worrall’s last over.

Stars kept themselves in the contest with late wickets but the damage was done earlier when Khawaja and Jacques Kallis (28 runs off 27 balls) laid the foundation with an 86-run opening partnership.

With two unbeaten centuries from three BBL innings going into the final, Khawaja was always the dangerman in the Thunder line-up and he didn’t disappoint.

He survived a huge shout for lbw on 37 that replays showed had a lot of merit, but his classy innings underlined his stellar run of form.

The highly-entertaining, see-sawing affair was a fitting send-off for retiring Thunder skipper Mike Hussey in his last game on Australian soil.
