Draft bill to retrieve property lost during war
An amendment with regard to retrieving property that were abandoned due to the 30 year long for is to be presented to Parliament.Accordingly there will be an amendment to the Land Possession Ordinance.
In general terms of the current act, only a time period of 10 years is allowed to establish the ownership of ones land.
However the amendment is expected to remove the clause pertaining to this time period.
Secretary to the Ministry of Justice Kamalanee De Silva stated that the draft bill has already been sent to printers and will be forwarded to parliament thereafter.
The new law will cover the time period between May 1, 1983 and December 31, 2012 .
Meanwhile, an amendment is to be presented to parliament regarding the definitions covering the transfer of land, as per a recommendation by the Supreme Court.
