As Seth Godin said in his 2003 TedTalk, “How to Get Your Ideas to Spread,” the purple cow phenomenon is real. He explained his parable in this way: “You're driving down the road and you see a cow, and you keep driving because you've seen cows before...Cows are boring. Who's going to stop and pull over and say, ‘Oh, look, a cow.’ Nobody. But if the cow was purple, isn't that a great special effect? If the cow was purple, you'd notice it for a while. I mean, if all cows were purple, you'd get bored with those, too.” As Godin brilliantly noted, the eye is drawn to that which is remarkable or unique: the one green apple in the pile of red, the white TV when the rest are black, the purple cow standing among the herd of white cows. So, marketers, how can you create a purple cow, or make your organization stand out? Today many organizations have yet to interact with mobile wallets. The ones that are have the opportunity to attain the “wow,” or purple cow, factor. It’s this “remarkability” that creates buzz and word-of-mouth-marketing, and, ultimately, drives sales.
