The Grand 70th Anniversary Ceremony of United National Party is Live now
Debt burden to be reduced by 2020 - PMPrime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe predicts that the debt burden of the country will significantly be reduced by 2020.
The The observation was made while speaking at the 70th Convention of the United National Party held in Borella this afternoon (10).
Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also went on to say that this would be the ideal time to develop the country under the rule of the coalition Government of the UNP and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).
“As we mark the 70th anniversary, the UNP is not just a political party,” he added.

Assault on two youth goes viral on social media
A video showing a group of people assaulting a young girl and a boy who had come to Kurunegala to attend the SLFP anniversary celebrations on Sunday has gone viral on social media websites.
According to reports, they were among a group of supporters of an SLFP organizer of the Gampaha District and had got into a brawl with another group of people who had come to attend the event.
The incident later led to a brawl between the girl’s companions and those who attacked her.
However, the police managed to rescue the boy and the girl and settle the matter.
The reason for the assault was unknown

SLFP Convention today in Kurunegala
The 65th Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party is currently being held at the Maligapitiya Grounds in Kurunegala.
The convention is held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena who is also the leader of the party.
According to SLFP General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake, this convention would be the biggest ever convention of the party, with supporters coming in from all parts of the island.
However, the SLFP members of the Joint Opposition have decided to boycott the Convention.

Police boarded the Avant Gaurd vessel to make an impression; Says Minister of Law and order
The Minster of Law and Order and Prison Reforms Thilak Marapana said in parliament today that police raided the Avant Garde vessel to impress the new government.
He stated this while participating in the adjourning debate on the Avant Garde transaction, the ongoing investigations on fraud and corruption that was committed during the Rajapaksa regime.

FCID probes on Basil's Gampaha land
The FCID has initiated a probe on the Gampaha land where the main office of Basil Rajapaksa was built, reports say.
The land has been purchased under the name of the 'Rajapaksa
Foundation' and investigations are pertaining into the purchase of the
land and its construction expenditures.
Although it is estimated that over Rs. 200 million has been spent for
the purchase and construction, no accounting records have been found,
reports add.

Rice Price cannot Rise
The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Institute states that the price
of rice cannot increase due to the abundance of rice stock.
According to the institute it is reported that there is an artificial upsurge in the market price of rice.
The Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research Institute further stated that 1
kg of Nadu rice is sold between Rs55 and Rs65 and 1 kg of Samba between
Rs70 and Rs80.
The Institute points out that however a further upsurge in the price of rice is not possible at the moment.
